BETWEEN FACES
Between Faces 2013
Media: digital cinematic storytelling (color, sound)
variable durations
What role does the Akrobat bridge (between Grønland and Bjørvika) play in the city of Oslo? Does the bridge knit these two neighborhoods closer together or it functions as a divider between "the new East and the West"? Between Faces is a performative, walking intervention that enquires into complex sides of contemporary development in two areas of the East Oslo: Grønland and Bjørvika. Qaradaki’s walk is based on personal impressions and factual descriptions of selected places in Grønland and Bjørvika. He considers the walk as a form of digital cinematic storytelling, consisting of narration, image material and music. The narration is read by a storyteller, and processed further as a voiceover linked to the image material. The image material consists of digital and freehand drawings, photos, videos and short animations. Grønland is a district in the inner city of Oslo just east of the center, in an area called Gamle Oslo. Bjørvika is a place between Gamlebyen in the east, Akersneset in the west and Grønland in the north. The meeting point between Grønland and Bjørvika, between "the old and the new", is of Qaradaki’s main concern here, and what type of consequences the changes in the area will have for the future of the society. For example, it is clear that the ongoing changes in the area have consequences for the identity of the place. At the same time the whole area will depend on how we perceive the relationship between East and West, South and North: this doesn´t only affect individuals but also entire ethnic groups and cultures. It is these decisions that are influential in defining a person´s attitude and prioritization of their identity.
