Title: Metamorphosis (utsnitt)
Duration: 02'45 min. (seamless loop)
Metamorphosis Kalle Risan Sandås
The video-animation Metamorphosis shows an alternating process between two figures: a photographic selv-portrait and a copy of the self-portrait made up of Arabic caligraphy. The figures slowly and simultaneously merge into the other, from self-portrait to caligraphy filled silhouette, from silhouette to self-portrait. In this metamorphic process the self potrait turns into a scray shape, my eyes look like that of a grasshopper or an insect. The symbol of the stranger, the Other (Arab or Muslim), as an insect or pest, strikes me. Shwan Dler Qaradaki´s art approaches problems concerning identities in a multi-cultural world. As a liberal Muslim of Kurdish descent, but after ten years in Norway he finds himself caught between possibilities, traditions, break-ups and prejudices. Who is Shwan Dler Qaradaki? A young, promising artist? A well intergated immigrant, or a Kurd who never can be Norwegian? A type of identity we don´t yet have a name for, and maybe we don´t need to give it a name either? Maybe we can find the answers to these questions in his work, a hard-hitting yet sensitive expression from a very interesting artist.
